The movie "A Beautiful Mind" is a story about how an awkward social outcast, John Nash, found himself first changing the world through game theory. The book is also based on the life of John Nash. This fascinating biography tells about his personal struggle with delusions and how he decided to become an economist after this event. However, what makes this story more interesting is the way it's told - through dual audio. One audio includes his thoughts and memories of events as they happened in real time, while the other audio allows you to listen to his thoughts only once he was an expert on game theory later in life. The story starts out with Nash as a young man trying to win over the heart of his future wife, Alicia. After struggling with how to ask her out on a date, he is able to work up the courage and ask her out. After this event, we learn more about Nash and what makes him tick: his life as a child growing up and how he was able to escape the depressing rut that many people grew up in during that time. The way that Nash's character is described through this dual audio makes you really feel for him as he struggles with himself and attempting to grow as a human being. Throughout the movie, we hear both his current thoughts and hear a voice in his head that he calls "The Bomb". This "Bomb" is a manifestation of Nash's schizophrenia. The "Bomb" is much more prevalent in the book rather than in the movie. In the movie, you only hear from the "Bomb" when Nash is about to give a speech or talk to other people. In this dual audio version, we hear from the "Bomb" nearly every time there's a tense situation. These include an awkward situation with him and his roommate and a tense discussion about Nash's future with Alicia. The book truly shows the strength of the human mind and character as it attempts to conquer itself and become something great. Despite Nash's experiences with mental illness, he was able to still find love, succeed in his career, teach economics at MIT, receive a Nobel Prize in Economics, write several books about game theory, and give speeches across the nation. The movie version of this story was not as well received by critics as the book version was. Russell Crowe's portrayal of John Nash has been widely criticized for being nothing like what he was actually like. He actually had schizophrenia long before the movie was released, but the schizophrenia part of his condition was not disclosed to the public until long after the movie. Nash has written several books since the book was first published. He has also taught at MIT, Yale University, and Harvard University.
The book is split into two parts. The first part goes over Nash's childhood in New York, his days at Carnegie Tech, getting drafted into WWII, being captured by the Japanese Imperial Navy in 1944, surviving a POW camp for over a year after being captured, and then later being freed from POW camps by an American submarine crew.
